This doctoral dissertation highlights Swedish cultural heritage in Lindsborg, a small town in Kansas with rural surroundings. The area around Lindsborg was a target for Swedish immigrants in the nineteenth century and developed to a center Swedish churches and organizations. In the United States, Lindsborg is widely known for its Svensk Hyllningsfest, a celebration of ethnic belonging that takes place every two years and engages large numbers of community members. The high peak of the festivities is the Svensk Hyllningfest Parade, a meticulously prepared public event that in recent years involved more than a hundred participating units marching through city center.

OLD MILL IN LINDSBORG, KANSAS

This video was created by Cory Barron, former Wichita video journalist, as a student project while attending Kansas State University. It tells the story of the 1899 Smoky Hill Roller Mill on the banks of the Smoky Hill River in Lindsborg, Kansas. It is told by those who were instrumental in restoring the mill, starting in the 1960's. The mill and its associated history museum are open to the public 7 days a week, except major holidays. Bethany College - Elmer Copley - Hallelujah! 1981.avi

Dr. Elmer Copley conducts the Hallelujah! Chorus sung by Lindsborg, Kansas' famous "Messiah Chorus", the Bethany College Oratorio Society. This was recorded on Easter Sunday 1981 when Bethany College, an ELCA Lutheran college, was celebrating its 100th anniversary. Handel's Messiah was first performed in Lindsborg in 1882, and has been every year ever since. Dr. Copley was the conductor from 1961 to 1988.
